'Best' years for vintage Cannondale touring bikes?

That is what I would do. Those shifters may still be working when we are both pushing up daisies.

They do sometimes fail, leaving you stuck in one gear. With bar-cons you have the friction option if the indexing gets out of whack.

Getting the bar up higher will help with the reach issue. I have lots of vintage bars here but don't know how they compare to what you have without measuring.

    New/old Cannondale tourer

My guess is that the RX100 crank came on the bike even though the catalog shows a Coda crank. RX100 was pretty nice stuff, so it's good that they substituted it instead of the Altus or RSX that they were putting on other bikes at the time.

Glad to hear that you picked it up. Is it Galaxy blue? What is the crank?

    Hello from Birmingham, AL

No problem. Check back in once you decide what you are going to do. There's lots of 1050 stuff on eBay and I probably have some on the shelves here. If you have a local bike co-op, that would be a great place to start looking for parts.

    Hello from Birmingham, AL

The original chain hanger was a plastic piece that was pressed into the two holes. Someone probably broke the plastic one and inserted a screw to replace it. I doubt that it will be a problem unless they greatly enlarged the hole.

    Hello from Birmingham, AL

I doubt that it would be damaged in the short term. Spreading them just adds more stress and contributes to long term metal fatigue. Just have a good look for cracks in dropouts and stays - something that should be done regularly anyway. My dealer in this era told me that these frames are...

    Hello from Birmingham, AL

I think that's a steel Tange fork in the picture. Check it with a magnet. Since the wheels have been replaced, you should check the rear dropout spacing and the hub width. This was a transitional period with Cannondale using 6,7, and 8 speed rear hubs in 1989. I haven't owned one, so don't...

'Best' years for vintage Cannondale touring bikes?

Yes, 1997 came with 7 speed rear and RSX STI levers. 7 speed bar end shifters were made, they are model SL-BS50. http://velobase.com/ViewComponent.aspx?ID=29191E7E-322B-41E7-B96E-47D57B54B88A&Enum=104&AbsPos=28 You could also use the 8 speed Ultegra SL-BS64 levers and add an 8 speed cassette...

    Hello from Birmingham, AL

Lots of ways to go about rebuilding it. You could fairly easily find the 105 parts and put it back original, use something period correct but higher end, or go with something slightly more modern. Start with the wheels and see if they are something you want to stick with, and decide how much...

    Hello from Birmingham, AL

I think that's a 1989 SR400, which came with mostly Shimano 105 (model 1050) 6 speed components. There were 3 different forks that year. The higher end frames got the AL fork (likely SR made), and there were two different Tange steel forks. AL forks have less fatigue life and have generally...

'Best' years for vintage Cannondale touring bikes?

What year T900, is it nine speed? 7700 bar end shifters are not too hard to find, I probably have a pair on the shelf. I agree that bar end shifters are better for touring. One of my friends had an STI shifter fail while riding out of state. No local bike shop had a replacement on hand, so...

'Best' years for vintage Cannondale touring bikes?

I don't think you can really go wrong with any of them but I assume you're in pretty hilly country so you might be better off with cantilever brakes rather than calipers. You would have to find a fairly recent Asian made model to get discs. I wouldn't let caliper brakes stop me from spending...

    1988 st400

The front photo gives a better picture of sidewall clearance. Rear clearance is comparable but I didn't get the right angle for the photo. Plenty of clearance for a tire of larger diameter. I think Challenge 34s would clear, and probably Kenda 35 clinchers would clear as well.

    1988 st400

I have 32 mm CX tubulars on this ST. Front is a Vittoria and rear is a Challenge Fango. Plenty of clearance with the 600EX calipers that came with the bike.

I hope to get to where the bike is stored today. Don't hesitate to remind me to check the tires.

Please help me identify this CAAD 4...BB?

Must have been a team bike but I don't know what team. Doesn't appear to have the two letter date code but I'd guess it was built in 1999.

    Built in USA, and..?

It's hard to tell from the photos but I think it might be a 1995 R800. None of the components look to be original with the possible exception of the brake calipers. Looks to have Campagnolo 9 or 10 speed parts which if in decent condition would be worth the asking price on their own.
