    Brake pad upgrades

Vintage bikes are great. Vintage bike brake pads not so much. On one of my rides I have a descent at up to 35 mph (56kph). I got to thinking one day that just maybe 20+ year old brake pads aren’t a good idea. I upgraded my R500 with Kool Stop pads. I’ve got another set on the way for my R400...

    Mavic Ksyrium wheels

I’ve been thinking about getting a set. I believe I’ve read the SL was above the Elite in the hierarchy. Are there different generations? Were there bad years? Looking at pictures it looks like a special nipple wrench would be needed. I don’t know the weight of my current wheels so I don’t...

    Stage race with your Cannondale

Has anyone done racing with a Cannondale? The idea has crossed my mind. I know very little. I’ve learned about categories, ie. Cat 1,2,3,4,5. Also the general idea that the lowest elapsed time of the combined stages wins. There is an event 10 weeks away that is about 2 hours from my place of...

    1986 SR400

Local craigslist ad. At least that is what I came up from the posted serial number (63121885156) and pictures. “Only” $135. It would fit me too. Appears to have the original components. Last week I would’ve picked it up. This week not so much.

Dia-Compe XCT brake pad part number?

What is the brake pad part number for the cantilever brake? In the 1990 catalog the ST1000 brakeset is listed as the 984. That pad part number is opc-25. I’ve found opc-25LK The ST400 lists the brakeset as just XCT. Dia-Compe seems to run their models by number not letters. If the xct takes...

    Highest touring model seen

What is the highest touring model that has been seen, owned or ridden? I myself own a 1990 ST400. I have not seen one in person higher in model number. In the gallery there is one 800 and one 900. I’ve never seen a 1000 (or higher) posted for sale on the internet in the short time that I’ve...

    Suntour shifter assembly

Anybody have a picture of the parts breakdown of shifter assembly? I seem to be short a rubber gasket/o-ring type seal. Are they important? edit: looking at my other bike and pictures of shifters on ebay it appears the rubber goes on the friction/fd shifter side

    Catch and Release

Anybody else have issues with releasing a bike back into the sea? I got a great deal on a nice 95 R300 last fall. New chain, seat, derailleur tune and axle lube is all that I did. Well, clean and polish too. The bike was too big for my wife and too small for me. So when a coworker mentioned...

    Touring frame: inches or cm

I thought touring frames were designated in inches. I came across a 1989 ST400 that the SN is in cm. The 89 catalog specification is in inches. Was there a change? If so what year?

    2005 T2000 graphics?

What the heck were they on about? Hindu? India? I can‘t find anything on the interwebz that discusses the graphics on the 2005 touring bikes. Any ideas out there?

    Rear derailleur CAAD3

I replaced my RD on my R400 with a 105 to match the FD. I can not get the L limit screw in adjustment. I’ve watched the Park Tool video multiple times. I do believe I’ve discovered the issue. The first step in the video is to make sure the derailleur hangar is straight. It looked straight...

    1988 Black Lightning

A beginning. And in that beginning there was light. A heartbeat before the existence of that visible light was….. BLACK LIGHTNING!!

    N+1=R300

I have added another Cannondale. I was just going to go look at it. The color and vintage initiated my ”need” to look. It turned out to be in good enough condition for me and a deal was made. It’s a 1995 R300, 58cm, in a nice looking dark metallic green. First impression was that it was...

    Looks like an 89 SR

A for sale ad has me trying to play detective. Sort of. The bike looks to be a 1989 SR 3.0 framed bike. But doesn’t have an aluminum fork. Swapped? Possibly, since brakes and rear derailleur seem to be not the originals. It has a Dura ace crank like a SR2000. But Campagnolo FD like a 900. Pics:

    CAAD5 frame great paint scheme

I found a great paint schemed frame for sale. It would likely cost more than I should or could pay. Its serial number starts with “N” = 2002. How would you complete it? What is a realistic working man’s budget?

    Center chain ring damage

Thought I’d do a quick clean and lube on the M500 this morning. I set it in the stand and did a check on my recent FD adjustment. Hmmm something isn’t right. Chain is binding.

SOLD Front derailleur. Triple front (52/42/30), 8 speed

Rehabbing a 2001 R400. The Shimano Sora 3304 return spring retaining portion of FD is broken off. FD no worky. I've discovered that the rabbit hole is very deep when it comes to front derailleurs...

    R400

I bought this bike because it needs work and the price was low enough for me. Tires are flat, rear wheel is bent enough there is a broken spoke, rear brake doesn’t work very well, front derailleur won’t downshift and chain seems loose. But everything else appears to my inexperienced eyeballs...

How far have you travelled for a bike?

Wondering if I’m crazy. Driving 360 miles to buy a R500 and R400 today. Making a family adventure out of it; kids, wife, dogs. That’s only half crazy. Full crazy is that we’re driving back home in the same day. Some may wonder why? The R500 is a 2004 and it is like new. The 2001 R400 is...

    CAAD differences

If I didn’t see anything that was already posted I apologize. It would be a neat reference if something was put together identifying the differences of the CAAD frames. It could be a can of worms considering both road and mountain bikes have their variations.
