Sounds familiar. I have mostly ridden rigid MTBs. While we don't have a lot of steep terrain here, we do have a lot of tree roots, branches, fallen trees, and all too often mud. I guess that the mud is better than the road tar packed between the calipers and the tire on a "memorable" road ride...

Can't tell you how many times I have been down that road. Hope that you can get it built up without regrets. I must say that even on projects on which I spent too much, I don't remember any that I regret.

The clamp diameter is 1 9/16" or 1.563". Search eBay for Headshok (or Lefty) stem. I just bought a used one with 25.4 clamp for $25 shipped. Be sure that you get your preferred bar clamp diameter as 26.0 and 31.8 stems exist.

BBB values are way too low. They buy bikes and resell them. For example, they have a nice 1998 Trek 5200 for sale, priced at $1200. If you check their "value" guide, they say $470 for private sale or $275 trade in. I would think that you could get $200 for your bare frame and fork if it's...

The monoplaner calipers are also sought after. There were several models. I couldn't tell what you have but they started out as Chorus, later versions were Veloce and Mirage. I don't remember if there was an Athena version.

It looks like you have the 8 speed shifters with the little cable adjuster. Those are quite nice and fairly desirable. The cheapest pair on eBay right now are $100.
