I was thinking more about the high and low gear ratios compared to a traditional 22/32/42 and 11-30 setup. Most of MTB rides involve some pavement riding, although I don't know how much time I spend in the 42/11 combination. Working from the low gear combination, 22/30 is roughly equal to 36/50.

What size chainring are you going to run? I've yet to try a 1X setup or even a double on a MTB.

I wonder what that loaded trailer weighed.

The closest thing I have here is the one on my SR500. I believe it's 5 degrees and 115 mm. Will text my friend in STL and see if there's a shorter one there. I have a drop bar on the Silk Road but I couldn't get close enough to the bike to measure the bar diameter. It could be 25.4 or 26.0.

Same here. I have two much newer Super V projects that I can't find time to work on.

Reminds me of the mailbox base I saw near the WI border made out of a cast iron Oliver tractor grill. That seems more practical to me. Snowplow regularly knocks my mailbox into the ditch. Would hate to lose a Cannondale that way.

Is the stem for a Headshok fork? I purchased several from a bike shop in St. Louis and had a friend pick them up for me. I still need to get down there and pick them up and don't remember what angles/lengths they are. I might have one here on a frameset but I think it has more angle than 5...

Just based on the serial number photo, the paint looks to be extremely nice.

It's going to be able to differentiate between the two 1984 ST models as the catalog we have only has specs for one. I'd guess the specs are for the ST-500 but even that isn't clear. Since the frames were the same, the model is essentially determined by the components that are on it.

Is BR86 a model? I think I have a later (circa 2000) new one. I bought several new ones from Bikewagon in 2013, don't think I've used them all.

I think you are in the right price range. I would turn the stem around.

Old MTBs make nice commuters. Clean it up, put some new cables, chain, and reliable tires and you should be good to go.
