Yes, if you could cut a concave that matched the diameter of the stay in a piece of wood, it would be less likely to deform the tube at the bend when straightening. Easy to do with a router or shaper.

How far have the dropouts been spread? I would probably make some sort of wooden structure to spread the load across the left side stays, with a fulcrum projecting to the bend in the drive side seat stay. Then pull the dropouts together with a piece of all thread. May not work, could kink the...

I had to look that fade up as I couldn't remember it. It's black at the front, Viper Red in the middle, and Charger Orange at the rear.

Are you committed to that model/year/color? As far as riding it goes, I'd think you'd be happy with a 3.0 frame which would likely be easier to find. They weren't painted coral though.

I'm not up on current Shimano, kind of surprised to see 8 speed. Pedals look nice. I've used similar Exustar pedals but the XTs look much lighter.

Yes, a 1987 SR400. It's quite rare to find an 80s frame in that kind of condition. How are you going to build it? Shimano 600EX would look great on that frame.

What parts are on it now? Except for the Mavic equipped 1992 R1000, all the road bikes in that era came with Shimano 7-8 speed groups. I have a few bikes with 8 speed Campagnolo. It works well and has the advantage over Shimano in that the Ergo shifters are rebuildable (and more reliable)...
