    Frame Measurement

Yes it is. Most steel frame builders in the 1980s measured to either the centerline of the top tube where it intersected the seat tube, or the top of the top tube where it intersected the seat tube. USA builders tended toward measuring to the center of the top tube, Italians often measured to...

    Frame Measurement

Actually, it's center of BB to top of seat tube, less 25 mm.

    Super V identification

That may be a 1997 or later swing arm. 1997 arms have a stiffening web that yours appears to lack. I think yours is a 1998. If you can strip off the side of the right chainstay, look for a Super V SL decal. See the Viper Red Super V 400 and 1000 in the 1998 catalog. If SV SL decal is there...

    Super V identification

I'm not sure that I've owned a 1996 bike, certainly haven't stripped one. I have a 1995 M900 that I purchased new, but I don't think I own a 1996 or 1997 bike. Have several in the 1998-2004 range. The paint on them has held up better than my 80s Cannondales by far.

    1997 F700 - Full Restoration

I'm regretting that I didn't think to suggest pink decals, after seeing a slate with pink 1987 SR400 posted here earlier this week. It would have been a nice throwback/tribute livery but the bike looks great and I'm glad to hear that it's living up to your expectations.

    Super V identification

Didn't all the Super Vs made prior to 1996 have the high swing arm pivot location? I was going to guess the OP has a 1996 frame based on the swing arm. If the OP is going to strip the paint, you might try to get the black off first with lacquer thinner and try to see what decals are on the...

86 SR500 Project is Moving into the Strip and Repaint Stage

The road bike will roll easier and be lighter but will be much higher geared, especially at the low end. Let me know if you want me to look for a smaller ring. I will try to get pics of the arms soon, but busy in the hay field for the next few days. I would still recommend that you try some...

Not sure what you meant about the stem. The quill is part of the stem, so perhaps that's where the disconnect started. Sounds like you are set there regardless. 38 teeth is the smallest ring that will fit on 130 mm bolt circle. I am over 60, rode 45 miles yesterday, about half on gravel...

    1987 16" SM500

Sorry, I tend to go through the posts from top to bottom without paying much attention to the sub-forum. Are you thinking upgrade or restore? I don't follow these too closely but I'd think $150 would be in the range. I'd guess you could find examples sold for much less, but that one looks to...

    Bottom Bracket Replacement - 1995 F1000

Those tools should do the job. Remember that the drive side cup is left hand thread, non drive is right hand. That should be a sealed bearing BB. You won't be able to grease the bearings but grease on the threads and inside the cups may cure your noise if the BB is the source of it.

86 SR500 Project is Moving into the Strip and Repaint Stage

Did you check clearance at the rings and ends of the arms to the frame before you pulled the crank? You generally want the arms mounted inboard as far as possible in order to get the best chainline. If the crank was well positioned before, I'd think it would be fine with the new BB. Do you...

    1987 16" SM500

I'm not sure what you are asking, as I think you have it pegged: 16" 1987 SM500 made on June 18, 1987. Looks to be in nice shape.

    COVID Convert - SR600

I'm with you. I was never able to average the same speed on a 20 mile loop with a Reynolds 531 bike (Bob Jackson) as on the same route with a 1987 Cannondale. I tried it several times and was always quicker on the Cannondale.

    Bottom Bracket Replacement - 1995 F1000

There's no reason that a Shimano BB of that vintage should be noisy when new. My guess is that your creaking noise is coming from something else - seatpost, stem, etc. There are lengthy threads on other bike forums about mysterious noises and what eliminated them. I'm guessing that you have...

86 SR500 Project is Moving into the Strip and Repaint Stage

I haven't gone through the catalogs but Edge sounds right for that era and model. I would guess that the original SunTour BB was replaced with a Shimano at some point, if I am correct in assuming that the stuck BB was a Shimano 600. What I was asking about though was what BB have you...

86 SR500 Project is Moving into the Strip and Repaint Stage

What bottom bracket did you use? I have some SunTour catalogs here but they don't list BB spindle lengths, just part numbers.

    CAAD 3 Team Yellow 60cm - R1000?

I haven't seen a lever on the left side. I'm not sure if the lever from the right will go in the left hand boss without modification. I will try to look around and see if I have one loose somewhere.

    Found this place by accident

"Gravel bikes" take many forms. I've been on rides where people were riding everything from fat bikes to road bikes with 23 mm tires, and everything in between. A mid-range 1990s MTB works fine for gravel riding and they can be picked up very inexpensively. I like my 80s Cannondale touring...

    CAAD 3 Team Yellow 60cm - R1000?

Those are Dura Ace cable adjusters. DA had the lever on the right side for the rear derailleur and the barrel on the left. Ultegra adjusters would have had the grey plastic barrel adjuster on both sides. Some folks like the DA lever adjuster, others prefer the Ultegra. I like the DA because...
