    New Guy in Alabama

Bar end shifters are a nice compromise, work great and are more reliable than STI. GripShift is probably the lightest option. I recall Bicycle Guide building a weight weenie bike about 25 years ago. They used GripShift. The road models are kind of hard to find now. I have a pair on a Trek...

    New Guy in Alabama

Remember to check clearance with the brake calipers as well as the frame. I have a bare (except for headset) 1987 road frameset here. I should weigh it out of curiosity. None of those models were very light by today's standards, 21-22 pounds according to the catalog. Even most of the 2.8...

    POLL: to vintage or not.

I have a Trek 1200 as well, but mine is a bit older. Built with 6 speed SunTour from an eBay frameset. My newest bike is a 2010 CAAD9. Just built it this week though the frame has been sitting here for 7 years. It was pretty modern back in 2013.

Welcome Jak. I have a 1987 SR600 that I've put about 8,000 miles on. It's plenty stiff but I think the harsh ride reputation is overstated. I'm pretty sure you can fit some brands of 28 mm tires on them if you want a bit nicer ride. I used to run Specialized 26 mm tires on mine but I'm not...

    Mystery CAAD3 mountain frame

There were a couple of rigid '97 CAAD3 models, the M900 and M1000. I'd guess what you have was sold as a frameset or is a replacement frame for one of those. We see quite a few frames lacking model numbers that have different paint from what would be "right" for the year and frame type. We...

    Mystery CAAD3 mountain frame

Does it have the large diameter head tube for a Headshok fork? The CAAD3 models in 1998-1999 were all F series frames with Headshoks. There were no rigid CAAD3s. Could be an Iris Blue F2000 frame.

90s era Timberland Edition Mtn Bike Value?

I would say 1997 M300LE. I'm just guessing at the value, but maybe $150.

Steerer Tube diameter for 2002 Cannondale R400

Yes outside diameter. Pretty sure it's a 1" steerer. Cannondale used some threaded aluminum 1 1/4" forks in the early 90s but they were long gone by 2002.

Odd serial number on my +/- 1990 3.0 series

I wish I had a picture of my '89. I was just over 6' and bought a 22" frame. Your saddle looks pretty low, what's the measurement from crank center to top of saddle? I run around 83 cm on a road bike, a bit less on a MTB. I run the saddle higher than most as I have knee issues if the saddle...

Steerer Tube diameter for 2002 Cannondale R400

That's a great color. 1" steerer I believe. Measure the OD of the stem quill. If .875" it's a 1" steerer. The Columbus Minimal is the easiest to find 1" carbon fork right now. http://www.henryjames.com/columbus-products/bike-carbon-forks.html Other retailers are getting $250 for the fork...

Odd serial number on my +/- 1990 3.0 series

I think the serial number breaks down to: 0 = 130 dropout spacing 20 = 20" frame 07 = July 90 = 1990 524 = sequence number (I believe # built that month) I'm kind of surprised at the 130 spacing. Although that's all that's needed for 7 speed, I would have guessed all the MTBs were 135 mm...

Wanted - Caad 4 Aero Saeco Fork

Guessing that's going to be tough to find outside of one turning up on eBay, most likely as a complete bike or frameset. Believe that same fork was used on the Multisport 2000. There were some other 1" aero forks, I know Profile made one and I believe Reynolds did as well. Does your bike have...

Where do I find wheels for 3.0 Road?

A lot of Sachs hubs (New Success, Rival) used cartridge bearings. They are usually common electric motor bearings, easily replaced. Other Sachs hubs used loose ball bearings. I have a NOS Rival here that uses loose balls. It's freewheel hub, 32 holes. It's 130 mm over lock nuts but could be...

    Year/Model Help

I will need better pictures and the serial number. Does it say 2.8 Series or 3.0 Series?

Cannondale M?? And a bit of Klein

I'd say a 1992 M700 despite the components not matching. Could have been built from a frameset or the frame from another model could have been replaced under warranty. Wolber rims? Last model to use Wolber was the 1991 1MB. Makes me think the bike may have been built up from a frameset with...

Sorry to hear about the Lefty. Hopefully Craig can get it fixed without having to get too deep into it. I'm sure you will enjoy riding it once you have everything in good shape.

Wondering if your frame sat a while before being built as there were no Manitou shocks used until the 2004 models came out (guessing late summer 2003). Yes, still some V brake Jekyll models in 2004 but that was the last year for them. I've never owned a full suspension Cannondale so I don't...

That decal style was only used on 2003 models. The 500 was available in silver gloss but it came with a Manitou fork in the USA and a Headshok in Europe. My guess is that your bike was built from a frameset. It has the high end Lefty Max fork, which only came on the top two models. The XT...

    M1000 parts?

I couldn't tell from the picture but according to the catalog, the M1000 came with a SunTour XC Comp Microdrive crank that year. It was actually lighter than the XT equipped M2000. SunTour MTB cranks had the same taper as Shimano. I think you would be safe using a Shimano BB with the same...
