Pretty sure it's been repainted. I only recall two/three color fades on tandems in a few years, mostly 2000 and later. For example, there was orange/red/black on the MT4000 in 2000 and blue/blue/white (Ice fade) on the 2002 RT3000. Someone liked to bomb the downhills with that ring.

I don't think your frame is made for a Headshok fork. Easiest way to check is to measure the OD of the head tube. Headshok head tubes measure in the 2.125" (54 mm) range, while bikes with standard 1 1/8" steerer head tubes measure about 1.75" (44.5 mm).

Sometimes you will need the tool for the nuts. If they turn with the bolt and don't loosen up, it's probably easier done with a helper on the other side of the bike, or with the crank arm off the bike. If you find that the 38 doesn't give a low enough gear you will want to look into changing...

There were separate European catalogs in some years. Do you know of any long time UK Cannondale dealers? One of them might have an old catalog. You might keep an eye out on eBay for one. That's where most of my print catalogs have been found. Looks like a CAAD3 MTB to me.

Not sure that's a 1997. Thought the triangular head tube decal ended in 1996. Looks a lot like my 1995 M900 - "diamond black metallic with violet pearl hyper-highlight". The 1995 came with cantilever brakes though.

I'd like to have a pair of those hubs for mine but the original T430 Alpine rims are hard to find. I'm already looking for a pair for my pink SR600. Stupidly let the originals go with a bike I sold to a commuter in NYC, thinking that they wouldn't be hard to replace.

The only blue frame that (may have) had white decals I see in the 1988-9 catalogs is the 1989 SM400: "Mystic Blue" but not pictured. The only other possibility is the "Blueberry" 1988 SM 500, but it appears that the decals were light yellow or at least not white. It could be that someone...

Welcome. Hard to tell much about the model without pictures but it's an 18" frame made on August 27, 1986. It was the 79th frame made that day. I'm guessing it's probably a 1989 model. Paint and any original parts will help with ID.

There's always hope. Look at how much better McLaren is doing this year compared to 2 or 3 years back. Headshok tools pop up on ebay from time to time but I've not seen any service manuals. There are a couple of European Headshok service places on the links page...
