    Glad you got it fixed.

    1983 Cannondale ST500 - Tires and ??

The 1990 XCD RD was compatible with indexed 6 or 7 speed use. The 1989 XCD 6000 was 6 speed, but I don't know for a fact that the geometry of the RD changed from 1989 to 1990. So the XCD 6000 might well work for 7 speed. Same goes for the XCE 4050: it was 6 speed when introduced but may work...

    1983 Cannondale ST500 - Tires and ??

I was mistaken about the long cage 4050. I'd forgotten that in addition to the road group the 4050 designation was also used for XCE. Found a NOS long cage XCE in the SunTour MTB parts box.

    1983 Cannondale ST500 - Tires and ??

I found a used long cage XCD. Some scuffs in the usual places on a used MTB RD but in good shape other than that. I have a can of touch up paint somewhere that would make this one look fairly presentable.

    1983 Cannondale ST500 - Tires and ??

I think the 4050 was rated for 24T in index mode. You might push it to 26 large cog but it's not going to have the total capacity you need to run a triple. I have several of them on the shelf and they are all short cage. Are you sticking with 6 speed? There are a number of long cage...

    1989 3.0 Mtb build

I've had that experience on rough steep gravel and a low gear that wasn't low enough. You have to stay seated to have enough traction but don't have enough power to keep pedaling. That's when a nice ride turns into a nice walk. I learned that Look Delta pedals aren't the best choice for...

    1989 3.0 Mtb build

What's your lowest gear? Looks like it might be a bit lower than 1:1. Can you ride an 18% grade? Local gravel rides have some short 10% sections. While I can get over them with pretty conventional vintage bike gearing, 18% is more than I can imagine riding - perhaps even on pavement. I'd...

    1989 3.0 Mtb build

That's pretty light for a 1980s frame. Hope you will put pink decals on it. Thanks for the ride photo. I didn't realize that there was that good a road up Mt. Tam. Where did you start the ride? Is it safe to ride Highway 1?

    C'dale 2.8 R700 - 2 versions in 1992 ???

Well that's interesting. I have New Success on bikes with both Ergo levers and downtube shifters and haven't had any shifting issues. The Sachs Ergo levers used a different index gear than Campagnolo, so compatibility with the derailleur shouldn't be a problem. One thing that won't work is...

    1989 3.0 Mtb build

You have interpreted the serial number correctly I think. I had forgotten the 1989 frames were 130 mm spaced but as they were mostly 6 speed I guess it makes sense. I don't know why they used 5/16" threading but they weren't the only company to do so. Nice project.

How did you remove the dust caps?

FSA Metropolis 2 speed crank on this red Cannondale

That's what I thought when I saw your first pic of the gears: junk. I don't understand the concept anyway. Triple cranks work fine.

    2002 Cannondale F3000SL CAAD5 21 Pounds!

Unless I'm mistaken, there were no caliper mounts on the 2002 CX Ultra. Great bike though.

    Cannondale1992-1996 - help me out!

That's a 1991 SH400. It's not completely original but most of the parts that I can see are there. Look for the size on the underside of the chain stay or seat stay. There are two systems: one has the size as the first two digits in the serial number, the other has the size in the 2nd and 3rd...

    C'dale 2.8 R700 - 2 versions in 1992 ???

In the USA Sachs components were used by the Volvo Cannondale MTB team and the Chevrolet LA Sheriff road team. The road parts are generally easier to find here than the MTB parts. The hubs, derailleurs and (Campagnolo made) Ergo levers are easier to find than the brake calipers, cranks, and...

FSA Metropolis 2 speed crank on this red Cannondale

I know people who demand kickstands on their bikes but I don't get it. Unless parked indoors on concrete it's always safer to lay the bike down or lean it against something. I'd bet that the original crank was 175 mm.

    C'dale 2.8 R700 - 2 versions in 1992 ???

How hard is it to find Sachs New Success parts in Germany? I have it on several bikes but it seems to be getting scarce on eBay in the USA. 1990s Sachs parts are high quality and New Success looks great. That would be my choice for a period correct group if I couldn't find Dura Ace, or...

    C'dale 2.8 R700 - 2 versions in 1992 ???

To be honest, I wasn't a big fan of the 1992 graphics. That said, I would never consider repainting my 1992 R1000. I don't consider 1992 105 to be particularly ugly. What components are you thinking of using as replacements?

FSA Metropolis 2 speed crank on this red Cannondale

I don't know what the differences were but the F4 and F5 were Furio-X frames and the Caffeines were evidently somewhat different.

FSA Metropolis 2 speed crank on this red Cannondale

I have a bunch of NOS FSA Alpha Drive cranks that would be good cheap replacements. Some are square taper, some ISIS, some the smaller diameter FSA spline. Most are 22/32/44, arm lengths are 170-175, silver or black. I've used them on several budget builds with good results. Some of the FSA...
