Thanks for the Bicycling article. I never noticed the steel thread inserts. Will have to check my 1984 frame. Anyone want to test standing on a bare frame at the dropouts for me?

I'm guessing the book is hard bound and won't lay completely flat to scan. I would try a few pages and see if the scans come out mostly legible.

Looks great. I have at least one pair of the roller cam brakes but have never tried them. Lots of SunTour stuff on hand here and I'm not doing much bike building these days. Let me know what you're looking for.

Sounds like a great buy. I would try to save the frame. First would get some good penetrating oil in the seat tube, then clamp the post in a vise and try twisting the frame. On frames where that wouldn't loosen the post I have cut the post off, leaving enough to get hold of. Then cut a slot...

Welcome. I believe that the 1993 fork was 1 1/4", so the quill diameter is 1 1/8". It would have been -15 or -17 degrees but Control Tech made other angles. There are a few on ebay but they are all MTB stems. 25.4 mm drop bars exist but the MTB stems might have to be modified to get a drop...

Those look nice. How do you plan to build? I could see doing one with period correct parts, and one with modern.

It was interesting to hear that SunTour came up with the idea for the Black Lightning. In a thread about the model on the Paceline forum, someone posted that in Japan the black/gold combination is associated with hearses. So perhaps SunTour decided they needed to sell the Sprint components...

I guessed that wider tires were part of the answer. I'm not sure what widths were available for 700c in 1985. The oldest mail order catalogs I have are from the early 90s and there's nothing listed wider than 28 mm.

I'm wondering who made that bike. I can't think of another company who finished their welds other than Cannondale and Klein.

I hope it doesn't turn out to be the first week of February.
