'Best' years for vintage Cannondale touring bikes?

From my experiences riding the Cascade moutains in Oregon with a 3 x 7 drivetrain with a 13-30 cassette, I can attest that you'll want the just a little bit extra that a 32 or 34T will give you when climbing long steep grades. The other tip is to make sure you have your saddle height and position set correctly. Your knees will thank you for that at the end of a long day of riding, not to mention your back.
Black Lightning, thanks again! Advice to reduce aches and pains is always timely and welcome!

Black lightning, thanks - but I seem to have run into a problem. My wheels are Sun/Mistral and Freewheel& both derailleurs are SunTour. The bike is essentially an unused time capsule. Mark at Rivendell tells me that I must seek out a freewheel to replace the 30 tooth cog or face replacing essentially all the drive train.
As the only existing problem at this moment is one of the Grip Shifts is pooched, I am thinking of just changing the shifters as I hold little hope of hunting down a Grip Shift....suggestions most appreciated!

Gripshift for SunTour is probably going to be hard to find. I have a few sets for Shimano 7 speed. I'm not sure I have 7 speed SunTour MTB shifters but I'm sure I have 6 speed. SunTour made 7 speed freewheels with 30 or 32 large cogs. There's a NOS with a 32 on eBay if you want to spend $250. You could also buy a new 32 cog for $22 and do some swapping on an easier to find freewheel. But according to Sheldon Brown, a Shimano HG freewheel should be compatible. Shimano sells a 14-34 and Interlock sells a 13-32. I didn't look further but there may be others out there.

Looking back at the photos, it appears that you bought the 1994 T1000. That bike should have been 7 speed Shimano and should have had a cassette hub. Perhaps post photos of all the parts and we can figure out what you have.

Might I suggest you message a member by the screen name of Chilehed. He recently overhauled a 1983 ST model to a trekking bar set up like you were interested in. He probably has some insight into what you are looking at. You can find his original thread at "Hello from Michigan."

Blacklightning, thanks for this. What a relief to hear that a Shimano 14-34 freewheel will fit! Sounds like the solution....! I don't hold out much hope that I will find a Grip Shift...so understand will definitely have to swap shifters out ( and middle chain ring, which is missing some teeth) likely along with rear derailleur. I don't yet have proper tools, so have arranged to take the bike in to be serviced and some parts replaced in a week or so.

Black lightning, I should point out that I ended up with a 23 inch frame after being re-measured and finding out that I had shrunk 2 inches in height since last bike fitting....so the 'large' or 23 inch turned out, by Cannondale's reckoning, to be the correct frame for my dimensions. Now to get good advice on fitting it to my size!
