Touring Chainring Removal Issue

Ok, so on my 2000 T2000 I removed the drive side to tear the chainrings to clean the whole thing up and ran into an issue where the nut on the spider where the crank arm is is intentionally installed upside down to be able to tighten it. But my Park Tool slotted nut tool does not fit in the tiny space to hold it so I can remove the hex nut. Hopefully I am explaining this well. I am quite familiar with tearing bikes down to rebuild them but this has me scratching my head. Hopefully the pics tell the story. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you sure the bolt doesn't thread into the arm itself (no slotted nut)? You can often remove/install chainring bolts with just the hex wrench, letting friction hold the nut. If there is a nut and it's spinning, you might be able to hold it with a screwdriver.

Yeah, there is a slotted nut on the underside. I originally thought same as you that it screwed into the arm. I tried to capture the image in the second pic, but it is hard to see. There is so little space between the slotted nut and the arm, I may need to take an old screwdriver and grind it small to fit in. I have no idea why they made it like this.

Hope that works. Do any of these look thinner than the Park?
