Red Shred Project

Good morning! This first post is for the purpose of throwing out an idea looking for confirmation of it working. I have everything else planned out for the most part. I apologize for it's length. Pics to follow.

I am building up a 1990 Red Shred with cantilever stays and a 1 1/8" head tube. Now I've owned a 1988 SR400 for decades, and within the past few years have built up a small collection of MUSA models that I can now afford. Most stay entirely OEM stock. This one however was bought as a frame only. They are very rare, and my example is in very nice shape; paint is shiny and is still intact for the most part. Most importantly it is my size. I'll be damned that it has the 1 1/8" HT, I could've sworn they still had a 1" in '90.

Before I had the frame I bought the fork; a RS Judy SL rebuilt by HippieTech Suspension before all the drama that followed him. According to him, it was built to 100mm vs 80mm. It was repainted and looks PRISTINE. HOWEVER, it has a 1" threadless steerer tube. Hence my conundrum.

My first thought was a crown and steerer tube switch. But then I remember that Chris King makes headsets that make mismatches possible. Unfortunately they don't make a 1 1/8 to 1. But I did find that Answer makes a headset reducer that narrows the opening to my needed 1". Basically it is 2 sleeves that press into the head tube. They ALSO make an Integrated Headset Reducer that includes the reducer into the headset. I'm happy with either option, since Answer is a good company that has been around for decades and build quality parts.

That is wild, I have a 1990 SM800 that has a 1' steerer. Do you have the serial number handy?

To Trailmix: Well don't I feel like a dumba55 now lol!! That makes complete sense!! Now that I dedicate some thought to it, I see the error of just looking at numbers and measurements and using logistical thought!

Anyways, sometime this week I'll shorten the 1st post, while still showing what I thought was an issue. This will free up sooner space for "the plan" and some pics. I love this community!

Nah, it happens to all of us. I don't think I could figure out half of the new headset and bottom bracket standards which is why I am so familiar with the Park website.

Can't wait to see the progress on your new frame. My 1990 M800 is also an April mfg. date:
