RD issue or frame flex?

I’m unable to determine a cause for my chain attempting to change gears on the rear cogs when starting from a dead stop.

This is on my 2001 R400; triple front, 8 speed rear.

It only happens when stopped at a stop sign on a slight incline. It is where I’ve got a busy street to cross that doesn’t stop. When traffic is clear I “stand” on one pedal (Usually the left) and get about half a revolution of the crank when the chain and/or derailleur attempt to downshift. Which is about the time I’m trying to clip into the other pedal. Annoying since I’ve got a limited view of possible traffic due to a rise in the road that gives me about a 200 yard view.

It was worse when I was on the middle chain ring and the second biggest cog on the cassette. But still does it somewhat on the middle chain ring and biggest rear cog. Lately it seemed to be getting worse. I performed a chain and derailleur lube yesterday. It was better this morning. But still “binding”. On the tallest rear cog it hasn’t downshifted often, but on the second it did it frequently. Last week I lost my balance and hit the pavement.

A complex problem that I may not be able to put in words. But it’s as if the frame is flexing when I put maximum power to the pedal. When I’m applying medium effort it doesn’t do it.

I've read this a few times to try and grasp what's going on. Are you sure that the derailleur is moving from one cog to another (shifting as you say)?
Or could your chain be slipping due to chain wear and tooth wear on your cassette? When this happens it usually is on a particular cog, or cogs, because some cogs are used more frequently than others, and therefore have accelerated wear. Although chain's stretch evenly and can cause shifting problems, and heaven forbid break which can be Very painful if you happen to be standing on the pedals. The first signs of wear are always slipping under load.
I'd start with a new 8spd chain and cassette. Check to make sure that the derailleur hanger isn't bent as well, and the derailleur pulleys are straight up and down. You also might want to check to see if the wheel axle isn't lose, allowing the wheel to move around a bit. I ran into that issue today myself.

Hmm, no I don't think the derailleur is moving. Because I've gotten off the bike and lifted the rear wheel with one hand and pedalled with the other and the chain returns to the previously selected cog. But the jockey wheel portion of the RD is usually pulled forward. Chain bind of some sort. The cogs don't look worn to me and the chain passes the chain measuring tool test.

I've been planning an upgrade and believe I've got all the parts; 105 brifters and triple crank and a SRAM 9 speed cassette. I wanted the identical gearing as my '04 R500 (the race bike).

My plan was awaiting a real nasty weather period this winter. We get them, albeit shortlived. I may get into it sooner.

It's a mystery to me. Other than that one part in my ride the bike works great. Even when I'm finishing my rides I always "sprint" to the house for 2/10 of a mile and I'm really standing on those pedals then. But it's flat and I'm already rolling. And never do I experience a problem. The last couple of rides I felt great about attaining 27 mph. Then I realize the "good" riders cruise normally at that speed.

Is the B-screw adjustment okay?
Was the current chain replaced to a new or used Cassette? Just brain storming with you; I am sure that if you replace all those parts your problem will be solved.

I have not checked the B screw lately. Will do. Thanks.

Original cassette, and likely the chain as well.

Chain is good. Not at the .5 wear indicator yet.

Buuuut, I do see sharks teeth on the cogs. Guess my eyes weren’t trained enough awhile back…

Thanks all!

I do have a new cassette @black lightning 1987 it’s a SRAM 9 speed. It is part of the final mods that I plan on doing soon. I’ve slowly been converting the bike over to 105 components. Just the brifters and crank assembly remain. Those parts are awaiting in a box in the shop for me to get around to installing them…
