Totally agree. That frame in its current 5 of 10 state is only worth $100 TOPS. I asked him to send more pics of the fork, which I believe is NOT the Fatty SL he is claiming... but the lower-end DD60 instead.I saw that listing. The catalog page he references had the caption: "Team Headshok's Greg St. John, part of our grassroots program of more than 80 sport and expert level riders, competing at the 1997 Cactus Cup." So it must be a special paint job for 1997, and at least 80 were made.
While I think it's really cool and would love to own it, his asking price seems rediculous to me, especially considering the poor cosmetic condition, and the fork is rusted solid.
Will do!Yes, as a big Headshok fan, this would be worth $100 to me just as a wall hanger!
If you make a deal and plan to build this up though, repairing the fork may be a problem. The SL in 97 used a one year only Fatty 70 cartridge where the later SL forks used the FT70 (or FT80). The difference is the 97 had a 5/8 shaft, where all headshoks since were 1/2, so available factory seal kits won't work. Also, I believe this one used inner races without a retainer clip, which haven't been used since, making them hard to find, and this fork likely needs them replaced. None of these problems are unsolvable, but the cost goes way up.
I'm curious about the fork too, I was looking for that in his pictures. let us know what it really is.
Seller took a pic of inside the Headshok boot. It does not look good. I wonder if Mendon Cyclesmith can even rebuild it:
My 2001 Bad Boy Ultra Fatty DL was actually worse....and Craig was still able to restore it back to new condition. However, it cost me $200/shipped, for new races and needle bearings, seals, etc. Here is the fork legs seller sent me:I think I remember coming across an old post of his on MTBR where he said he bought out all the old parts from Cannondale when they stopped working on them, and I'm sure he has a junkyard of old forks to pull races and bearings from. The problem here is that it looks like the inner steerer tube is so rusted that the races won't lay flat without major work, and that's critical to shim the bearings properly. I don't know if he would be willing to tackle this.
