Hello, new to this forum, I picked this gem up recently. What do you think? I tried looking at the old catalogs, I think it’s an early ST, but not sure.

That's a 1987 ST400. There should be five others in the Gallery if you want to search. They came in yellow and white colors, and a blue sold by L.L. Bean. Yours would be the only yellow one on the site.
I'm looking forward to seeing a picture of your bike when it is cleaned up and road worthy.

The yellow looks off on my computer screen.

If it's a repaint, the serial numbers may be obscured. I've sanded or scraped paint off to reveal numbers on other bikes.

I've seen quite of few bikes where the painters put their logo on in that same location.

I am going to guess it is an 83 or 84. Smaller diameter downtube, no bottle mounts on seat tube and early looking welds make it a very early production ST.

I stand corrected. I think that you are right. In addition to everything you wrote, that crank is also a 1983 or 1984 stock part. A 1987 would have had a Sugino crankset. I'm thinking that it is an obvious repaint.
Good call.;)
