Dead of my frame ???

Hi guys
Bought today this complete original M2000 from 1992 .
After cleaning it and a closer look at home i saw this problem of the chainstay. Even on the left side you can see that only the paint has a longitudinal stress crack.
Do you have any solutions or is the frame lost?

Hello,

This could be the death of this frame. I would take it to somebody who can braise/weld aluminum. They would have to zip up the crack, and sand down the best to make it even.

Contact a local motor cycle shop, or auto shop and see if they have a welder for Aluminum.

Hi Brian
Thanks for your reply!
I think the costs will be too high for me.
The next thing is why this happend!? Is this a general weak point? Was it caused by a crash?
Transport? I don‘t know.

I've not seen that before. My only guess is a flaw in the tubing when it was new. Looks like a really nice bike otherwise and lots of valuable parts on it. Will the seller take it back or give you a partial refund? Those frames are not too hard to find. Perhaps you can find a replacement and swap the parts over.

Hi
Yes I will get a partial refund, so I paid around 190 € for this bike- I think thats ok, related to the parts. All of them are in good shape.
I will ask for the price of welding-
Your suggestion to put the Parts to another frame is a good alternative !
Thank you

I have seen this before. Probably caused by a combination of design flaw and fatigue.
If you can find a specialist that can weld really thin alloy, then it is worth a shot.
