Bike will be put up for sale when fixed.

Still has the owners manual and hub manual.
Bad grinding in 2 & 3 IGH gears.

I took the hub apart and found the planet cage is cracked in 3 places. Also missing 1 pawl spring on the driver that fits inside the planted cage. Hum, related? Did leaving the one spring out in the factory lead to the planet cage damage?

Also needs the rubber for the 3x9 shifter, rotted and gooey. Leaves black goo on the hands if you touch it.
I found a couple of shifters on ebay europe for $$$

We'll see if Aarons has the hub parts. called. $140 labor plus parts and shipping. Doesn't sell parts. It would still need a shifter for another $100. Adds up to more than what the bike could sell for. Can probably sell the broken hub as a parts supply. But not Ride Your Bike. Phbt.

Option B is to replace the back hub with a normal 9 speed freewheel hub and put on a regular 9 speed shifter and make this bike a 9 speed instead of a 27 speed.

32h rims & hubs.
Couple hours of time, have all the parts needed. IMO, would sell for as much as if we fixed the broken hub.

Option C is to add a 2 or 3 speed crank to make this a 54 or 81 speed bike!

Option D, steal the 3x7 hub from a Bike E I have in storage. Probably won't have the right spoke count or old.

I have wondered about those 3 x 9 hubs. Not sure but I think that was originally a Sachs hub. Probably not worth fixing it - I would just go with a 1 x 9 setup. Is there a cable stop for a front derailleur cable?
How much do you want for it as is?

I've been perusing the catalogs from 2000 to 2009.

The Adventure 1000 with the Dual Drive 3x9 looks to be a 1 year only version, 2004.
The LG serial number seems to make it a 2000 frame so I guess that's not right. I can't see them having frame sitting around for 4 years.

Scraped the rubber mud off the grip. The rubber had turned to a sticky gooey putty.

Hub reassembled with the broken part for now. rear wheel unspoked. Rim seems good so I plan on replacing the hub with a roadie hub. 135mm old for 9 speed cassette. I'll check the local coop for a proper fit.

Removed the shifter and cables. Full length cable housing on both. Not the best imo. Full length housing has much more friction, collects water which promotes rust. Some zip ties and some wedgie clips in stops and some screw on clips holding it on. I took some more photos of them.

About adding a front der. Should be possible. One issue is the rather large weld behind the bb that the cable would rub against. I've used a bit of teflon liner from cable housing to keep cables from sawing through. There are countless plastic cable guides for bb shells. This bike has a single hole in bb, not threaded. There are some guides that have a nub that could fit in there. The cable tension can hold it in place. Or a bit of double stick tape trimmed to fit and not show.

The chain stay cable stop is a open C shaped guide, not a regular stop. Ditto for the dual guide behind the head tube. Cannondale used plastic wedges to hold the full length cable housing in there. IMO a threaded cable stop would work on these. Just a matter of finding two or three the correct diameter. They are used on countless brakes, rear derailleurs, gyros and brake levers.

I thought it looked like full length housing. I was trying to make sense of the frame build date as well. The only thing I can think of is that there might have been a delay getting the 3 x 9 components. Perhaps the frames did sit around for over a year before being built.

Rear wheel rebuilt with a decent road hub. Looks good.

found a 9 speed SRAM trigger shifter at the coop.

And I thumbed through the owners manuals for the hub and the bike. I found these in the back of the manual. Pretty clear this is a 2004 model. Right down to the second the label was printed. Located in the 2004 catalog only in this configuration. They identify the serial number as the sticker on the frame, not any of the numbers stamped into the frame. Not a good practice as a sticker is too easy to remove. I had a carbon Cannondale Synapse that had a similar sticker (and no numbers in the frame) but I found many others at bike index with the same serial number. Is "LG" the frame size and not the year/month?

It wasn't uncommon for Cannondale to do that. My 2001 Jekyll has a build date of 1999! It almost makes me wonder if Cannondale was thinking of releasing the Jekyll as a 2000 model but for some reason decided that 2001 would be the first year.
