1988 SR500 missing serial number- catalog demo?

I won a Goodwill auction last year for a 1988 SR500 (at least it matches the catalog), and though I’ve looked at all the stays and the bottom bracket couldn’t find a serial number. The paint looks original- the bike looks like it wasn’t used, not even any scuffing on the water bottle- so I don’t think the number is hidden under a repaint. Did demos and catalog models have serial numbers?

I checked my 1988 SR800 and the serial number is on the underside of the drive side seat stay. My three 1987 SR models all have the serial on the underside of the left chain stay.

I can't answer your question with any certainty but if there is no serial number your premise makes as much sense as any. Bike is surely a 1988 SR500 and everything looks to be original. I couldn't identify the rims but they look consistent with Wolber. Are those the original Michelin Select tires?
