86 SR500 finally finished (except for tape)

I haven't bought the cables or the down tube cable guides yet. The Shimano levers look like they just duplicate the movement of the old levers except on the bar. I went with simple click levers over the ones on my MB, although I like the way they operate. The old handlebar diameter is 25.4mm so...

86 SR500 finally finished (except for tape)

I've decided to convert this bike to a flat bar road bike largely because of my age and the leaning forward thing. I had hoped to have the finished bike pictures up, but the 3" rise handle bar from Spain has been held up in Orlando. I hope the guy didn't try to sneak anything over in them. I did...

86 SR500 finally finished (except for tape)

I honestly don't know why the chain broke, but something hung up. The derailleur is okay except for the worn wheels, and it was working the day before. I've gotten used to the Shimano 100GS shifters on the old MB, but probably will find a combo unit of brake and shifter that will work with the...

86 SR500 finally finished (except for tape)

BTW, the rear derailleur is a Shimano 600 series RD 6400 which wasn't in use until 1988. It will handle the seven sprocket cassette so I'll just refresh it a bit and see what else I've got to work with.

86 SR500 finally finished (except for tape)

Well, I'm back on the MB for a while. Yesterday the rear derailleur started shifting up and down intermittently, and then the new chain broke. It looks like the wheels in the Shimano 600 rear are worn and wobble. I also broke the shift cable. (face palm). On closer inspection, it looks like the...

86 SR500 finally finished (except for tape)

My neighbor is a retired Marine a couple of years younger than I am, and he rides a Raleigh road bike. I let him take mine for a spin this afternoon. He came back and said, "you really have to keep on the handlebars, this bike is quick!" It made me feel a little better. I'll get it back out this...

86 SR500 finally finished (except for tape)

I'm going to give it a run this morning before the heat gets all the way up. Yesterday was just a short ride around the block to make sure the wheels didn't fall off. The bike is very quick in regard to handling, something that I'm not. LOL

86 SR500 finally finished (except for tape)

I just finished re-assembling the SR500 and adjusting the derailleurs. Now for the test ride in 90 degree and muggy weather. The handlebars have not been re-taped yet, but I can't wait to fall off this good looking thing. I'm going for a short ride! LOL

    Brake Bracket Hood?

I'm just going to wrap the handle bar in black, and let the brakes stay shiny. None of my earlier bikes had hoods, and it didn't affect the ride from what I remember.

    Brake Bracket Hood?

Well, they are definitely gone so I might change out the levers with a newer set if I can't find anything. Everything else is finished except for the crank which will be in tomorrow, and the tape for the handlebar.

    Brake Bracket Hood?

I need to find black hoods for the Shimano SLR brake brackets on my soon to be finished 86 SR500 project. The originals were a very dirty white and got tossed. Any info is appreciated.

86 SR500 Project is Moving into the Strip and Repaint Stage

Well, except for not having the right year logo, the red on silver looks pretty good! I'll shoot a couple of coats of clear over it when the rest of the project is complete next week.

86 SR500 Project is Moving into the Strip and Repaint Stage

Nice looking spread! Dad had a couple of high school football players that ran alongside the wagon and threw the bails up with pitchforks. When it was time to get the hay in it was an all hands effort! Mom drove a 48 Ford flatbed with the top of the cab cut out that had a bale loader hooked to...

86 SR500 Project is Moving into the Strip and Repaint Stage

I remember those days on a big farm we had in Upper Michigan back in the fifties. Forty five pound bales of Alfalfa all day. all summer. I was too small back then at ten years old to toss those things, so I pulled the bailer and chased groundhogs. LOL

86 SR500 Project is Moving into the Strip and Repaint Stage

I finally gave up on the pedal removal project. Heat, oil, drilling relief holes into the threads, taking the pedal apart and using an air impact then an eighteen inch breaker bar with a two foot cheater, all failed to move the thing more than one screech. I found a replacement on eBay that can...

86 SR500 Project is Moving into the Strip and Repaint Stage

I always thought it was a wedge until I tried to buy one. Apparently it is called a quill, at least that is how I finally found one. "UNIVERSAL BICYCLE QUILL STEM BOLT BIKE PARTS 575" (from eBay).

86 SR500 Project is Moving into the Strip and Repaint Stage

The SR 500 project is about 90% complete, and the bike is in better shape than I first thought. It still needs the crank and the quill for the handlebar stem, and the decals haven't arrived yet, but I looks like a bike again. I posted the before and after as it is right now.

I think this will be fine with the 54-42s for the present. It is very flat down here, and I never get into the middle set on the MT bike. Just let me know where to send the money. Have a great 4th!

86 SR500 Project is Moving into the Strip and Repaint Stage

I ride an old steel mountain bike a couple of miles through the neighborhood every few days. This new one would have to be easier on the legs than that one is. All I want now is to get it finished while I'm still young enough to ride it. LOL
