Pretty sure that's a 1989 ST400. Doesn't look too bad to me. I might upgrade the derailleurs, shifters, and brakes to something nicer but those are great all purpose bikes.

Poor reading comprehension on my part. Perhaps you can do without facing it. Put some layout fluid on the faces and tighten the cups. Should show if the faces are square or not.

Can't imagine why they would do the BB threading that way. Is the shell 68 mm? Know what BB you want to use? Will have to be something with a right side cup that interchanges with the left. Phil Wood with two left cups would be a good solution.

Could it be that the frame geometry is more suited to downhill than technical climbing? Pretty sure there were DH specific versions of the frame. Didn't know 74 cm bars existed. Guess that if you are comfortable in the riding position the greater width helps with stability.

There was a white SR500 in 1988 that was equipped with six speed 105.

That's a nice find. I still can't make much out of the serial number but it looks like it might be a 63 cm frame.

Serial number and component models would help. Just guessing that it may be a 1999 F700.

You can probably decipher the serial number closer than we can from the pic. What are the components? Offhand I'd say it's a 1987 SR1000, just because that's the only model I recall that's white with blue decals. Should have Superbe Pro bits.

Looks to be original except for the saddle. I love the touring bikes for their versatility. Catalog lists the top tube for the 25" frame at 23.25", guessing there was a typo combined with a bit of measurement error. Honestly hit and miss when it comes to value. I bought the same bike (27")...

Good to know. I have 5 Headshok frames so I may hit you up for a stem at some point. As I understand it there were only two head tube lengths, so most of the vertical adjustment was done with the stem.

Nice work. Let me know if you need a different stem. I bought a number of new ones from a bike shop in St. Louis. Had a friend there pick them up for me so they're still down in STL but I can have him check what's available.

It's always easier to pin the model down when the bike has most of its original parts, as yours did.

You didn't happen to save the serial number by chance?

The sticking point for me with it being a 1988 is the August build date. I think we've come across one bike built in June that was a next year's model. I'm sure that the change to next year's model production varied depending on how sales were going and other factors. There were two U-brake...
