Need help identifying vintage Cannondale frame

If it came with the 6500 group it would most likely be a 1998 or 1999 R1000. The crank is a later substitution. Ultegra was still 8 speed in 1997. I don't recognize the paint scheme. Are the decals on top of the paint or clear coated?

    First Road Bike.

There may be a two letter code bottom right under the cable guide. All my frames are either older or newer than 2000-2001, so I can't say for sure where the code is.

    Auston from Texas

Welcome. I started out with a Cannondale MTB too but since good roads are a lot more plentiful than trails in my area, I have spent more time on road bikes. It's always nice to have a back-up no matter what type.

    Purchase unknown Cannondale Racing bike??

I did some looking at aluminum Bassos but couldn't find one that looked like the pictured bike.

    First Road Bike.

Looks to be a bit of a mystery. Color and build look to be right for a 2001 R500, but the decals are different and it doesn't appear that your frame has the two letter code for year and month where it should be on that era frame. I can't read everything in the serial number picture. Is there...

    24 inch wheels Cannondale?

The 16" frames are the only ones I have seen with 24" wheels at both ends. You might message Brian, he has a lot of knowledge on the early MTBs.

    24 inch wheels Cannondale?

The 16" 1987 frames came with 24" wheels front and rear.

    Purchase unknown Cannondale Racing bike??

I don't believe that's a Cannondale. Look at the chainstays and dropouts and compare them to 1980s Cannondales. From 1989 to 1996, Cannondale road frames had cantilever dropouts. After 1996, only the CAAD2,3 and 4 road frames came with threaded forks. Those frames had a replaceable...

1997 CAAD2 Headshok frame, without suspension?

Small spec changes even in USA market bikes were pretty common. They may have been due to short supply of some part, or because a comparable component became available at a better price. If the substitutions on your bike were for example XTR level, I would assume that they were not original to...

1997 CAAD2 Headshok frame, without suspension?

So not a step down headset conversion? What's the steerer diameter? Cannondale was making 1 1/8" head head tube frames in that era for the rigid bikes, so I would think the frame was built with the intention of a Headshok, no matter what model it is. My guess is that it is in fact a 1998 F700...

1997 CAAD2 Headshok frame, without suspension?

I'd guess a fork substitution on an F900. Bike looks black to me, perhaps Super Black with decal substitution? Cannondale colors were sometimes oddly named. The 1995 "Diamond Black Metallic with Violet Pearl Hyper-highlights" would have been more accurately described as Purple. I haven't...
