I don't own a MTB that old but I checked two 1987 road bikes. They both have the serial number on the underside of the non drive side chain stay.

The road frames in that era had holes in the chainstays that were plugged with a pop rivet before painting, not sure about the MTBs. I'm guessing those were the vent holes for gas to escape during welding but they wouldn't have been water tight with a pop rivet. My guess is that this frame...

Thanks for that. Looks to be from about 20 years ago. Interesting to hear that they were producing 4-500 bikes per day at that time. Would be great to track down that manager as he could probably answer a lot of questions that come up.

I didn't remember it but all the 1987 MTBs except the SM400 came with SunTour roller cam brakes. What are the hubs and rims? I might be interested in them and the crank. I'd need to check the frames on hand but I might be interested in the fork and brakes. I assume the fork is 1".

Thanks. That '92 R1000 was a lucky find, it's only missing the original Mavic handlebar and Kingsbery seatpost. The 1991 SR1000 was much the same. The main difference was the very hard to find Grip Shift. I don't know if the Mavic rear derailleur used the same cable pull ratio as Shimano...

It's the boss on the other side that fails. The part that the steel rod threads into isn't very strong and can break off. Hoping yours is in good shape.
