    R400

I’m having difficulty with the new FD. First thing I noticed is the return spring in the new 105 FD is quite a bit stronger than the previous Sora FD. Second is the limit screws seem to me as having very little effect in positioning the cage. I can get the L limit screw set up nicely for the...

    Center chain ring damage

    Thanks. 351W for my wife’s 72 Mach 1. Yet another project….

How far have you travelled for a bike?

The 2001 R400 black/yellow CAAD3 cost me $80 USD. The 2004 R500 CAAD4 blue cost me $450 USD. The black one had a broken rear spoke, old tires, and broken front derailleur. I got the seller down $20 from his asking price. The blue one is like new and the owner read me like a book. He thought I...

    Center chain ring damage

I dunno. I fiddled with the FD and cable whilst watching a Park Tool video. All 3 gears are selectable. When riding around the block, selecting to go to the largest chain ring it seemed as though cable tension was not there. A second push on the gear selector yielded cable tension and a gear...

    Center chain ring damage

I’m not that knowledgable enough or experienced enough rider to know the difference I would suspect. Finding a replacement chainring no matter the tooth count is what matters most to me. Interesting of note: the few vintage chainrings that I was able to find on epay I did find a set that had...

    Center chain ring damage

Other than it’s tooth count being 2 fewer, what in practical terms does that mean? I’ve barely scratched the surface of tooth count/gear ratio specifications. I’m basically ignorant as far as bicycles. But willing to learn.

    Center chain ring damage

Yes 110 mm bolt circle diameter. I repressed my PMD and used two 5mm allen wrenches and measured across with dial calipers. Being that the bolts are not straight across from each other and crank arm is installed there was a fudge factor to come up with approximately 4.5” and subtract the allen...

    Center chain ring damage

I do not know. I’ll have to measure. Brings up a thought I’ve had lately. I mentioned in another thread that I suffer from a self described condition I call PMD (precision measurement disorder). I’ve got a couple drawers and a cabinet full of calipers, micrometers, machinist rulers, etc. And...

    Center chain ring damage

No it is 36T. This is the chain ring on my purple 1993 M500 (Altus A10 26/36/46) . I thought I'd work on it while I awaited the FD to show up for the R400.

    Gravel bikes

Any or all. It's a model I don't have and hope to some day rectify. Meanwhile I'll have to be satisfied with other's good fortunes to own a much desired (by me) model.

    Center chain ring damage

Thought I’d do a quick clean and lube on the M500 this morning. I set it in the stand and did a check on my recent FD adjustment. Hmmm something isn’t right. Chain is binding.

    Back to Biking!!

Well I’ll be a monkey’s Uncle! I just pulled up the 2001 catalog. It indeed does say for the Road Warrior frames that they are caad3 cyclocross. As best I could read anyway. The scanned pages get pretty blurry when zooming in. I have to zoom with my aging eyes.

SOLD Front derailleur. Triple front (52/42/30), 8 speed

It could be that all the stuff I read was coming from the absolutist point of view that the FD gap once adjusted should be no more than 2 mm above the outer chain ring. I admit I can suffer from precision measurement disorder from time to time. But in my limited experience you are probably...

SOLD Front derailleur. Triple front (52/42/30), 8 speed

Here is an answer to someone looking for a FD replacement: It seems like an innocent question, but the situation can be maddening when a replacement FD is needed for any of the 30-42-52 cranks. Front derailleurs have a spec that has been called by Shimano both "Min. difference between top and...
