    L.L. Bean?

Yeah, I think that is another little oddity. I believe they used a triple crank with only two chainrings, similar to the ST400 of that era.

    L.L. Bean?

Yeah, it isn’t too bad. I got it from a college student so it has some rust from sitting out. Not sure if he ever rode it.

    L.L. Bean?

This is a terrible photo, I have been working on this bike bit by bit and it has been a slow journey. The fork crown is very narrow and will only accommodate ~ 1.5 width tires which is the main difference between this bike and an SM400. I have replaced the derailleur with the original Alpha...

    Max tire size for ST-500

Serial number, size, model and color should cover it. These early frames are the most difficult to find information on. I am going to start a new thread, I have already derailed this one enough.

    L.L. Bean?

I know I am digging up an old thread but I am curious about this bike. I have an 87 LLBean Pathfinder which from what I can tell is nearly identical to the SM400. Interestingly, I have an 87 SM400 made on the same day as my Pathfinder and with the exception of the fork and the paint, they are...

    Max tire size for ST-500

Great question. There are a few reasons and I will probably expand the scope to include those at some point. When I first started compiling these, I was only interested in the 1986-1993 versions because this is my favorite era of Cannondale bikes and these are the numbers that make sense as...

    Max tire size for ST-500

Your bike appears to be a 1985 model, post a pic of the serial number and I can tell you. Anyway, the answer to your question is not an easy one. Early ST frames did not have the dimples on the inside of the chainstays so the condition of your rear wheel and variances in brand/model will be...

    Full Campy

It is an 84, you can tell from the bottle cage bosses under the down tube. Only time I have ever seen 3 sets of bosses on a race bike is the 84 SR Cannondale.

I would bet it is an 18". The 20" hybrids (at least from that era) had a horizontal top tube and the 18" had a slight angle. For me, I can instantly tell the size of a mountain bike but the hybrids are harder to determine the size by looking at them.

    1989 Cannondale value

We have three 1989 ST400s (19”, 21”, and 23”) at our house, great riding bikes. All of the 89s that I have seen have indented chainstays that add clearance for larger tires which is nice, especially for larger riders. The indentions started to appear sometime (~November 87 IIRC) during the 88...

Take a picture of the serial number, it will tell you the size. My guess would be 18". I had an H300, 1996 I think, and someone asked to buy it and I made the mistake of letting it go.

What size and where are you located? They pop up around here from time to time.

    1989 Cannondale value

A lot depends on your market. Bikes that sell quickly for $300 in Chicago or Portland might not have any takers at $75 in Bottineau.
