Hi all , just recently acquired this frame and fork , actually it was built up with a mixture of random parts non cannondale related so I’m wondering if this actually a Cannondale frame at all ?
What do you think ?

Lots of similarities to Cannondale, but the derailleur hanger and top tube cable stops don't look right. Check undersides of seat and chain stays for stamped dot matrix serial number. Is that a steel fork? Resembles the ones I used to buy from Hoosier Bicycle Supply.

I can’t see any dot matrix stamps anywhere as the paint is so thick , its been coated with the hanger still in place .
Yes steel fork , chrome plated .
If it was a cannondale would it have a stamp somewhere on the frame ?

Also the down tube bosses are connected together via a thread running right through the downtube.

I’m not aware of any other frames that have the Cannondale similarities like this , anyone else know any ?
Klein ? Or not classy enough !

If you are not keeping the paint, I would start to remove the area under the chain stay, and then BB and look for numbers.

we can start there.... and remember. On a lot of models, Cannondale for example made a R600. it will be the same as a R800 etc... just the different components make it a higher frame.

Could you elaborate on this, I'm not following:

"Also the down tube bosses are connected together via a thread running right through the downtube."

Klein would be the logical alternative to Cannondale. I have one here but it's from 1996 and I'd say your frame is quite a bit older. Klein is a good place to start looking though. I would focus on that derailleur hanger. Was it retained with a chainring bolt/nut?

The fork looks to be the same as the ones I have here. Not sure where they were made but the company I bought them from has ties to both European and Asian suppliers. Guessing they were made in Taiwan. Nice forks but a bit on the heavy side. They were still available NOS in the USA 4-5? years ago.

Yeah this is what I meant about the downtube bosses
And yes the hanger has a single Allen key bolt on .
Forks also steel , but heavy .

Those shifter bosses look different from the die cast ones that Cannondale used. Yours appear to be made of machined steel but the originals could have been replaced.

Yeah they are steel , did cannondale use this method aswell ?
I’m tempted to strip the paint but I think it’s so thick maybe I’ll just do under the BB .

Cannondale used the same concept but the pieces that fit next to the down tube had a concave on the tube side and were made of what we refer to as pot metal. It corrodes easily and it's common for the threaded portion that extends inside the tube (on the right hand side in the picture) to break off, so they are sometimes replaced with an aftermarket version.

I've never seen a number like that on a Cannondale. I'm thinking your frame must have been made by another builder. Not many aluminum builders ground and finished welds. Klein was one but I don't have much knowledge of the early ones. I would try to find good pictures of early Kleins and see if you can spot any similarities.

Most of the Principias that I have seen do not have ground and finished welds, but it appears that the welds are finished in those catalog pages. It doesn't appear that the catalog bikes have replaceable hangers, but some Principias did have them. Pilo models that were used were D50, D87, D111, D115, D116, D124, D175, D210, D297, and others. Principia may have made their own hangers originally though. You might try to contact some Principia owners and ebay sellers and see if you can find similar serial numbers.
