Easiest way to be sure is to read the size of the tire. I'm pretty sure it's an F series mountain bike, built specifically for Backroads for use by people on their bike tours. The long serial number on the fork(?) appears to be specific to Backroads. Head tube decal would help place the year, as would a CAAD number if it has one. Approximately late 1990s vintage. Looks to be in great shape, especially for a rental bike.

Yes that number was on the fork. Looking around the forum I did notice the rear frame geometry looked like that mango colored bike. Wheel says etrto 622 and the tire is 28 inch. If it was custom ordered could they have matched this frame with the suspension/fork they used on a silk road? The guy I got it from said he had to cut some parts to get the replacement head/fork on the bike.
