Reviving a classic

New member here so thought I’d share the latest build of the R700 just completed.

When I picked this up it was looking rather sorry for itself, not to mention embarrassed by the steam it was flaunting. The frame was in pretty good shape but the components were somewhat in need of some tlc. So I got to work taking its clothes off.

Got the frame down to its bones, a good shower, degrease and applied some car polish to it. Started to look more like cannondale now.

Decided to go for the black them with this one so ordered some new R500 rims and rubber, gave it a new bottom bracket, bar tape, stem adaptor, brake pads and chain.

I picked up a Cinelli frame set which had a cracked head tube (which is now a wall hanger) for the new stem which this bike was screaming out for. How could I not right. .

Full break down of all components and rebuild with a good greasing where needed. Including every thread on the bike. There’s something just satisfying knowing that lol.

Done and dusted. Road tested and rides like it just come off the production line. You just gotta love a vintage cannondale.

Next frame waiting to be built up is the Orange R1000. Followed by the (colour undecided) R800 when space allows. Will post pics if anyone is interested when I manage to seem the caad 8 to make some room. Running out of wall space ‍♂️.

Thnx for looking.

If you know what year that bicycle is, would you please share. If you don't know, a picture of the serial number would do.
Thanks.
I looked around the internet because that bicycle doesn't exist in any Cannondale catalog. Everything like it says 1997. (And there are plenty of them out there). However there is another person with the same query on this website who says 1998. *See attached pictures. Either way it looks like a European model only.
It doesn't always happen, but it is nice to solve a mystery once in awhile.

Hi. Yes of course silly me. I should have included that. This one is from Jan 1998. And you could be correct that its a European model, ive seen other mentioning this before.

Nice work. There is a top cap for the Alter stem but it seems to have been optional. Not sure if all had the same graphics.
