2.8 Version Identification

Hello, dear Vintage Cdale Forum!

Please help me identify the full name of my bike and its frame size - I bought it privately and second (or third etc.) hand a few months back - it was advertised as a 52 cm frame.

On the left chainstay it says: 05001925070
and on the right one it says: BI - 0302

So - after a quick research I'm tempted to say it's a 50 cm frame size from January, 1992. However, the first 0 seems weird. Other than that, I didn't find any info why it says "BI - 0302" on the right chainstay.

Thank you very much for your time.

Hello,

yes, you have a 50cm frame. 0 is the spacing. Do you have a photo of it? Or does it show any color? any original parts on it?

have you looked thru the 1992 catalog?

So, at first I thought there was a difference in r900 and r1000 frames - just checked the 1992 catalogue again and it seems they only varied in components. Is that true?
Shifters, brakes and brake levers are Shimano 600 (are those original? r900 originally had ultegra components and the r1000 mavic components according to the catalogue).
Only other thing remaining is what the right chainstay is supposed to tell.

Thank you so much for the quick reply! You might consider editing the verification walkthrough such that it states that the number for spacing is sometimes before the number of frame size. Anyway, thank you so much! :3

Looks like you have it pinned down, a 1992 R900. I checked my '92 R1000 and it has the same stamp in the right chainstay as your R900. I'm guessing it was used to identify the frame type before it got painted. I would expect all 1992 2.8 frames to have the same stamp, and all '92 3.0 frames to have a slightly different stamp. This would allow the paint department to quickly ID the frame type, so that no 3.0 frames got painted as R1000s and no 2.8s got painted as R400s.

In the 1986-1992 serial number section: see Version 2. That is were the dropout spacing codes are listed.
