Okay, so it starts…
Stripped down to the frame
Time for some cleaning and judicious wet/dry sanding of scratches.

Planning on using gloss black rustoleum enamel and wet sanding between multiple coats to fill in the scratches.

I’m going to try to avoid disturbing the original stickers unless someone can recommend a source for some decent replacements

Update: after several failed stops and starts where I tried to just sand out scratches, I decided to strip the frame down to bare metal. Primer kept bubbling up at the edges where the original paint interfaced with bare metal so I just started over, and I’m pretty happy with the efforts.
I found duplicolor self-etching primer followed by duplicate-cilirchevy black metallic and 1 k clear extreme gloss finish to work out pretty well.

This is the status of the frame now, after painting and decals. I’m debating whether to put another layer of clear coat over the decals.

PS - I purchased replacement decals from egovinyls on eBay. Extremely helpful and the decals are identical to stock, made of thick high quality material. Unfortunately since lord trump took over, you can’t get these decals from overseas if you live in the US.

Looks great. My advice is to give the current clear coat some time to cure properly. Then consider if it needs another coat. If there is one thing I have learned from painting my own frames, it's to not be in a hurry. For me, I left my clear coat cure for at least a month. Then if I need to recoat it, I give the current clear a nice scuff with a grey scotch brite pad(800 grit) or 1200 by hand, then respray after cleaning and degreasing again.

I put a second coat of clear coat on yesterday after letting the first coat cure about a month. Prior to that I did a light smoothing with 1000 wet/dry prior to the second layer of Duplicolor Hi-Gloss clear coat 1K.
Interestingly, it’s nice and glossy in some places and matte in some others, which is less than ideal since there is a contrast between areas in the finish.
I’m planning on letting it cure another 3-4 weeks, but in reading some other info online for using duplicolor clear coat, it’s a polyurethane finish and the rec is to wait 48 hours between clear coat finishes, then wet/dry 800 -> 1000 —-> rubbing compound and a final wax coat.

Anybody else have experience with duplicolor finishes?
