Full Campy

Local CL ad. $750 obo.

Looks like a neat build. Needs tlc. And shorter cable housings.

I’m recalling some special model that did come with Campagnolo. I could be confused. It happens after looking at thousands of bike ads for the last couple of years. (Edit: found online a 89 SR900 and this one is older).

I could be wrong, but those components look to be at least ten years older than the bike. If you find out please let us know.

His ad does state to call for more info. Thinking about calling. Cuz there has to be a good story.

The pictures of the bike are taken in a car wash bay. So he at least cleaned the dust off.

Well, I should’ve perused the catalogs a little better. Because a 1985 (or 1984) SR900 is what this appears to be…

Now that price doesn’t seem as ridiculous as I first thought. Not that I have that much at this time. Would be a neat addition. If it were big enough.

I called the seller. It might be big enough. He's 6'1" and says it's too big for him.

He was given the bike from a family member a couple of years ago. Because he's the family "bike guy". Except he's into BMX and 40's-50's cruisers. Only accepted the offer of a free bike because it was kitted out with Campagnolo.

I may go "look" at it this weekend..................................

It is an 84, you can tell from the bottle cage bosses under the down tube. Only time I have ever seen 3 sets of bosses on a race bike is the 84 SR Cannondale.
Thanks for that!

I read on the interwebz this week (don’t recall where) while looking for SR900 info that an 84 would have metal cable guides on the top tube vs plastic. True?

I imagine there couldn’t have been a whole bunch of SR900’s made. I haven’t been into Cannondale’s long enough to have a clue. But 41 years on a complete one has to be unique. It’s a bicycle, not a classic muscle car. I get it. But this bike turns my gears. A bunch.

It certainly is something special. I'd make arrangements to take it for a test ride. If you're not comfortable with how it rides what is the use in owning it?
I will remember that part about the third set of bottle cage mounts on '84 road bike frames. That is very interesting.
As far as the size goes; it looks like you can get a good saddle height, but you might consider putting on a shorter stem.

Yes, I’d definitely ride first before buying. I’ve learned a lot in the last couple of years. Enough to make a decent appraisal of a bike (I hope). At the top of my list is no bent forks. Not even a little bit. I’m currently dealing with two. I think I could judge fit for myself pretty good as well.

If it does turn out to be an 84 it would be a no go. According to the catalog there was no 60cm offered. I have a hard time telling the difference between a 58 and a 60 from pictures. A 63cm is easier. This bike is not a 63cm frame. But it looks close to my Black Lightning’s which are 60cm.

And by now I know a 60 in a criterium frame is as small as I’d care to ride. I haven’t compared the geometry of this one vs my BL’s. Looking at those numbers on “paper” really doesn’t mean a whole lot because that is one area that I don’t fully understand. Basic dimensions I get, but differentiating between angles, rake and trail is beyond my comprehension.

Rain, rain, rain in the forecast until midweek. I mentioned to the seller that I did notice the photo op was at a car wash and commented something to the effect that at least he probably washed all the dust off. I heard an audible gasp over the phone before he said he’d never wash a bike such as this in a car wash bay. So he has much reverence to the bike’s specialness. Also it turns out he owns the car wash. I’ll have to wait for a dry day.

Sorry for the long bloviating post.

Me too! ;)

A thing is only worth what someone is willing to pay. And/or have room for. The seller is most likely to reject my offer in order to wait for a better one.
Fingers crossed he doesn't. It's frustrating to me to make a reasonable offer and then have it declined in the hopes they might get a better offer. It makes the A-hole in me want to wait several more months and then low ball the crap out of them just to annoy them. It's not nice, but that's how it makes me feel.

I viewed the bike. Too small. Bummer. It’s a 58 cm. But it is a 1984.

No crack at the drive side crank arm and spider junction. So that’s good. For someone. Rims are fairly true and best of all: NO bent fork.
