So I picked up an old Cannondale recently, but i'm having trouble working out what model it is.
The serial number which i found on the right chain stay is 56100687026. All i can gather from this is that its a 56 frame and manufactured on the 10/06/87??
Ive already stripped everything off it to restore the paint. It came with Ultegra 600 tricolor groupset with sti shifters, not sure if this was standard?
Any help at all would be amazing

I think it was repainted previously, as the decal style doesn't match the year in the serial number. It would have been a 1988 model if built in October '87. The Ultegra bike in '88 was the SR800. 1988 was the first year for Ultegra, though only downtube shifters were available. Ultegra STI was not available until 1992, and was 8 speed. 1988 Ultegra was 7 speed. Colors for the SR800 were red and sea blue. I have a sea blue 1988 SR800 54cm bike here in near perfect original condition. If you want to verify anything, let me know. Note that Cannondale catalog pics often vary somewhat from actual production bikes. Top tube decal is different on my bike from the catalog pic, but I'm sure my bike is original. Download the '88 catalog and check out the specs if you are looking to restore it. Most of the parts are fairly easy to find. I think I even have some NOS Technova tires in the basement. Wouldn't recommend riding them but would be a nice detail to add to a display bike.

So I checked out the 88 catalog and based on the seat post, handlebars and brakes its most certainly a sr500. It looks like the owner has resprayed it and fitted the 8 speed ultegra to it mid 90s. Not sure if its worth restoring to original, ill prob just get it resprayed and fit 88 decals at a minimum.

Its a blank slate. You can restore it to factory specs of whatever 88 model you choose. Or a Modern/Vintage ride.. 88 Decals with modern parts...

These frames ride great either way. :)
