Hi everybody...My name is Tim I had my Boardman Hybrid comp 2014 stolen last month and the universe gave me this beautiful old Cannondale, the thing of dreams when i was a teenager. I know little about bikes, but fell in love immediately. From the vintage catalogue the logo and frame letters it looks like a 1998, possibly f900 but the paint job only came out in 1999, (unless uk paint models are different) with the logo and build initials poitning to April 1998.. i am looking to restore it to its original glory for daily heavy use, both road and trail. Can you guide me towards first naming it then, acquiring the parts.

I am so in love with this bike. Have only been out on it a few rides this week and looking forward to stripping it down and giving it some TLC. Sorry from the pics it looks like front fork is backwards, is just the stem undone, while i inspect the spacers. ANy help would be great. Have lovely week. T

Date code looks to be JD, so April 1998 build date. Nothing like it in the 1998 USA catalog. All the rigid bikes are listed with steel forks, that looks to be an AL P Bone. Needs to be turned 180 degrees by the way. The XT/XTR build was used on the F2000 but there isn't a rigid bike in the catalog with that level of parts. Could have been built from a frameset. Is the paint flat black?

Yes flat black. I also checked with the catalogue and cannot identify the base frame it comes from, is it caad 2 or 3 as the decals would suggest. How/where would i find the list of paint varients that were released in 1998 in the uk. This might get me closer to the model if I can find what was releases to the uk. Do you think this could have begun life as a road bike.?

There were separate European catalogs in some years. Do you know of any long time UK Cannondale dealers? One of them might have an old catalog. You might keep an eye out on eBay for one. That's where most of my print catalogs have been found. Looks like a CAAD3 MTB to me.

Thanks for the reply, I had a look at this today https://www.pinkbike.com/photo/12274238/ it seems like a possible match. Would the stem have had shoks fitted raising the angle of the crossbar, it feels that I would either want to put pack the DD60 cartridge into the stem or swap the spaces to just above the wheel, to create that same angle.

I don't think your frame is made for a Headshok fork. Easiest way to check is to measure the OD of the head tube. Headshok head tubes measure in the 2.125" (54 mm) range, while bikes with standard 1 1/8" steerer head tubes measure about 1.75" (44.5 mm).

its defiantly a 97/98. Maybe a M400. The XTR and XT are from the same year. Cannondale had crash replacement frames. They did not have the model number on it. This makes it more fun for us. This could have been the case with this frame. Good thing is you have a nice light frame, great fork. and XTR/XT. Score. masker sure that fork is turned around. Insane it was ridden like that with the stem extender. This is a 26" bike, but you could make this a great street bike with 26" slicks.

hello, i have a similar frame but whith headshok. I also can't find my matte black in any catalog.

900 from 97 does not exist in any catalog with headshok, but it is curious that we share the color and paint finish
